Johan Ferreira

Johan Ferreira

Chief Executive Officer Cupric Canyon Capital and Khoemacau Copper Mining

Johan Ferreira has 32 years’ experience in the mining industry. Over and above his rigorous operational experience, he has a proven track record in mine design, project management and the commissioning of mining projects.

Johan started his mining career in 1986 with Anglo American as a Learner Official and progressed to the level of Senior Vice President Operations - South African Region for what became AngloGold Ashanti. Prior to joining Khoemecau, Johan was the Regional Senior Vice President - Africa Region for Newmont based in Ghana. During his four years of service with Newmont, he had many successes. Apart from dealing with complex internal and external stakeholder relationships, infrastructure challenges, and new project development, Ghana was one of Newmont’s top performing operating divisions under Johan’s leadership.

Johan holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) degree from the University of Pretoria and is a qualified and certified Professional Engineer.


Boikobo Bashi Paya

Executive Director Stakeholder Engagement, Sustainability and Legal Compliance

Boikobo Bashi Paya has a Bachelor of Science (Geology) from the University of Botswana and a Masters of Philosophy (Geology) from the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. Mr Paya joined Khoemacau Copper Mining from Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), where he was the Director of Research and Development.

Prior to joining BIUST, BK enjoyed a long career with the Ministry of Minerals Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR) where he rose to the ranks of Permanent Secretary.


John Munro

John Munro

Director Corporate Development

John Munro has 25 years of experience in the mining and private equity industries. He began his career with Gold Fields of South Africa in 1991, and in 1999, Mr. Munro joined the newly created Gold Fields Limited as the head of feasibility and acquisitions. He was appointed to the Executive Committee of that company in 2002, and assumed responsibility for international gold, copper and PGM operations and development projects, covering Ghana, Peru, Australia and Finland, before returning to Business Development and Strategy in 2006.

In 2008 he was appointed CEO of Rand Uranium, a private gold and uranium start up in South Africa, owned by First Reserve Corporation, AMCI and Harmony Gold. Following the sale of that company in 2011, he joined First Reserve Corporation’s buy out team in London. In 2014, Mr. Munro commenced working with Cupric Canyon covering business development and corporate finance.

John is a non-executive director of Norgold SE and Manuli. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

From early 2017 to end 2018 John assumed the role of CEO of the Cupric group.


Dale Quaker

Chief Financial Officer

Dale Quaker has experience in coal mining, chrome smelting, transportation logistics and construction environments. Prior to joining Cupric Africa, he operated as a consultant to the mining industry on mining, logistics and finance. In his last corporate role, he held the position of Group Manager for Marketing and Logistics for Xstrata Coal – South Africa. Prior to that position, Mr. Quaker was the Corporate Financial Manager for Xstrata Coal where he gained extensive experience in managing and controlling the management reporting function, tax matters as well as IT and information systems.

Dale is a qualified Chartered Accountant and is registered with the Chartered Institute of Management.



Mmama Mhlanga-Fichani

Mmama Mhlanga-Fichani

Vice President Human Resources and Communications

Mmama Mhlanga-Fichani holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Fairmont State College, West Virginia, USA, as well as a Master’s in Business and Workforce Development from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania USA. Mrs. Mhlanga-Fichani leverages over 10 years senior management experience and has diverse experience from various industries including Financial services, Non-Governmental organizations and telecommunications.

She joins Khoemacau having recently been at Air Botswana, where she was the Director Human Resources. Prior to that she was with the Standard Charted bank where she was the Country Head of Human Resources. Mrs Mhlanga-Fichani has also worked as Human Resources Manager for the African Comprehensive HIV/Aids partnerships which was a public private partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates, and Merck foundation and the government of Botswana.


William Morrell

Senior Vice President Early Stage Studies and Exploration

William Morrell holds a B.Sc. Engineering (Mining), Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Mineral Economics) and Masters in Engineering (Mining) from the University of the Witwatersrand and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (University of Pretoria). Mr. Morrell has 22 years’ work experience and joins Cupric Africa from the Mubadala Investment Company where he held the role of Senior Vice President. While with Mubadala, Mr. Morrell was the CEO of Guinea Alumina Corporation and initiated the Al Taweelah Alumina smelter project. Prior to joining Mubadala, he was employed at Gem Diamonds, De Beers and Anglo American.

William is a member of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, as well as a member of the Engineering Council of South Africa.


Chrisjan van Wyk

Senior Project Manager

Chrisjan van Wyk has been working in projects since 1997 and has had experience working with contractors as a Project Manager and as part of the client’s owners team. Although he has experience in project studies from concept through pre-feasibility and feasibility, most of the projects that he has been involved in have gone into execution and have been delivered to the client’s expectations. Chrisjan has done projects for major mining companies like Anglo American (coal and platinum), Kumba Iron ore (iron ore), Mopani Copper (acid plant), UraniumOne (uranium) as well as junior mining companies. Between 2008 and 2012 he was the Project Manager for Kumba’s owner’s team that developed the 10Mtpa green fields iron ore mine ($1b in 2008 terms) in the Northern Cape, South Africa. As Project Manager he was responsible for the day to day management of the full project scope that included two open cast mining pits, processing plant, surface infrastructure, dewatering system, roads and three housing developments. The project was successfully completed under budget and in time with an excellent safety record.

He is a qualified engineer and has a B. Eng (Mechanical) from the University of Stellenbosch, as well as an M.Eng (Project Management) from the University of Pretoria.


Warren Rigelsford

Project Execution Readiness Manager

Warren Rigelsford has 33 years of experience in power, mining and consulting covering both operations and projects. Warren started his career in 1985 with Pacific Power in New South Wales, Australia, as an undergraduate and professional officer. After a successful start to his career in the power industry he moved into the private sector where he spent 15 years working for a publicly listed Canadian company in contracting and consulting, working across all aspects of the mining value chain (predominantly in coal mining in the Hunter Valley and Queensland), rising to the level of General Manager and Director for their Australian operations.

Warren moved to Glencore in 2008, formerly Xstrata Coal, where he held the role of Manager Projects (Global) for the coal division and it was during his 6 years at Glencore that he moved to Southern Africa to further his project career. In 2014, Warren joined Khoemacau as the Project and Construction Manager and successfully led the prefeasibility and feasibility studies and the early FEED works.

Warren holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) degree from the University of Technology, Sydney, Masters of Business Administration (Technology Management) from Deakin University, Melbourne, is a Charted Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the institution of Engineers Australia and a registered Professional Engineer with the ERB (Botswana).
